It doesn't.

Engagement feels good to us and our clients, it looks good to visitors and competitors, and it's one of the key metrics reported by social and advertising platforms. But it doesn't generate, correlate with or predict sales.

Engagement is any interaction with a post or ad – like, love, comment, share, click to enlarge, click to visit a link, and even the innocuous click-to-read-more on a longer post are all engagements. We love engagement. Everyone loves engagement!

But people who engage aren't people who buy. In this study commissioned by Facebook, 99% of purchases were made by people who saw but didn't engage with posts or ads. Facebook itself, the king of selling engagement, cautions about this.
